The Campaign

In order to convey the contents of the project, the FIE focused on Instagram. Many fencers are connected via Instagram, and there are also many people from related organizations following their accounts. By utilizing this it thought that Instagram could be the way to inform many people in a short period of time about the project.

Creative Execution

FIE made the explainer video public with Instagram as the axis and called to fencers all over the world to spread it, and repeatedly screened it even on large monitors at the venue on the day of the "World Championship" event and other events thereafter. The video was also released on FIEs facebook page and official website, the places where the target audience of fencers and related organizations will be most likely to notice it.

As a result, although the video release was 9 days before the tournament at which donations were to be collected, 73 players participated in the project during the "World Championship" tournament and the number of donated gear climbed to 295. After that, the video was utilized at events in Switzerland, Spain, and Japan, such as the "Takamadonomi Cup Fencing World Cup". We expanded the project extensively by using the explainer video. To date, about 1,300 parts of gear have been donated to date (as of June 2018). The donated items have been sent to Brazil, Colombia, Rwanda, Senegal, etc. and are effectively used by young fencers who otherwise wouldn't have had a possibility to participate in the sport.

However, when utilizing Instagram, we need to draw attention next to huge amounts of other information and to be able to convey the significance of the project in a short time. Therefore, FIE director and former Olympic fencing medalist Yuki Ota decided on an "explainer video", which is specialized in explaining topics clearly. Instagram maximum motion scale during 2017 was one minute. In that time, not only did we need to draw the interest of the viewer by the videos special appearance, but also make the viewer self-identify with the picture-book like story in which prominent fencers and Mr. Ota appeared and successfully took part in the donation project.
