For Western Sydney University, the Region, Alumni and Students, there exists an unlimited world of opportunity. A world without boundaries, full of endless possibilities. Unlimited celebrates the amazing, untold Western Sydney University Alumni stories by chronicling their rise and rise to successful lives and careers. They are stories of unlocking human potential - triumph against the odds; winning when the mainstream says it’s impossible; victory that is sweeter because it’s tougher to achieve. And they are real. From a child soldier in the Sudanese Civil war to becoming a leading member of the Sudanese community and refugee lawyer in the suburbs of Western Sydney, Deng Adut's story is a phenomenal achievement of one man's dedication to helping others less fortunate in the face of great adversity.
This is the true story of Deng Adut, a child soldier who became a refugee lawyer. Deng plays himself. The Sudanese people are Deng’s local community, non-actors, many are refugees. They’re grateful to Deng for the legal assistance he contributes to the community, and were prepared to revisit the horrors of their past to tell his story. To gain Deng’s trust, we created a previs. This led to an lengthy interview. Casting the community in the Western Suburbs of Sydney was non-traditional: door to door visits, letter drops, sit downs with families explaining what we were making, as we’d be re-creating scenes of war and requiring them to dress as the brutal regime they’d escaped, as well having their children hold weapons, near pyrotechnics. They arrived to set by the busload. Tears were shed when the women saw the men in military uniform, it was an intense and humbling experience.
