Brief Explanation

Japanese matsuri are festive events that unite cheering crowds and unique sounds of celebration, taking place where there are neither borders between performers and spectators, nor entrances and exits. Now, a “3D sound” movie featuring original music performance by Kodo — Japan’s world-renowned Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble — expresses the realistic sensation of intense excitement at Japanese festivals. A superb live performance by Kodo is recorded from start to finish in a carefully planned single take from the POV of a spectator immersed in the onstage experience. This performance movie combines meticulous digital sound processing synced with complex performing action to produce 360° surround 3D audio, capturing precise positions of players and distance from the camera not even covered by images at some moments. Attention: Use headphones and turn the volume up for the best experience. 3D SOUND: Use headphones and turn the volume up for the best experience.

Execution

The concept is “bodily sensation and presense”. Te world-renowned Japanese drum performing arts emsemble Kodo’s performace – full of festive energy and intense excitemet of Japanese Matsuri, the festival, – is reproduced through two main techniques-single long-take shooting and 3D sound – to depict the festive excitement embracing all performers, spectators, and city streets without borders that is the essential characteristic of Japanese festivals. Use headphones for the best experience. 3D SOUND is not a live recording using binaural sound recording.  It is actualized by taking every sound source of all instrumental parts recorded separately and dimensionally localizing every sound in three dimensional space.  With this method, sounds even from space not seen in the forefront visual image will exist and be heard as 3D SOUND.
