[Prologue] Visual art using calligraphy and painting tells the story of coexistence of nature and people. Treating calligraphy as moving images made it accessible to people who don’t read Japanese. [Harmony] Four seasons of the Japanese rice fields are recreated with digital imagery, using the whole room as the medium. 1200 sculptural screens on the floor simulate rice stalks; each stalk comprises a circular screen, 350 millimeters across, lying flat on a shaft and coming up to an adult’s waist. The flexible shaft enabled people to walk among the screens and experience a unique sensation of wading through the images. The screens and interactive sensing technology combined to create a deeply immersive effect. In springtime, water-filled green paddies attract little creatures – as visitors walk in, sensors detect their movement, and little fish gather around. In autumn, golden fields spread endlessly with the mirror effect, where villagers celebrating harvest appear.
