After Typhoon Haiyan devastated communities in Samar and Leyte provinces, Unilever detergent brand Surf immediately responded by taking part in the big tasks of ‘cleaning up’ after the destruction. With the shortage of fresh water due to damaged water mains, Surf built a water recycling facility in Barangay Union Coastal, Mayorga, Leyte using the rubble created by the typhoon. It gave the community a steady supply of filtered rain and gray water that people can then use to wash clothes. Some 50 households immediately benefitted from the project’s initial output of an average 450 liters of recycled water per day, growing exponentially since the service started.
