We had to make Sunsilk relevant to the 20-something girl who spends a lot of her time online, chatting with friends and using emoticons to project her mood. Now, hair has always been intimately connected to our target audience's mood- 'bad hair' days anyone? So we thought, why not bring emoticons and hair together? Why not have emoticons- with hair? We gave the smiley a makeover and the outcome was the Sunsilk Hair Emoticons, a downloadable pack to express her mood in a language she was familiar with. It was fresh, it was engaging and it was her.
