Write a short summary of what happens in the radio or audio execution or campaign.

“Real Nice” is a one-of-a-kind music collaboration between three of Australia’s hottest young artists - DJ/Producer YoungFranco, Aria Award R&B winner TKay Maidza and Rapper Nerve - all of whom have a personal connection to football. A piece of culture and anthem for the game, rather than another sporting ad, this music track sits at the heart of A-League’s campaign “Here Come the Future”. The masterfully created track captures the energy and buzz of a fan-filled stadium. Within the first three seconds, you can feel the celebration and passion through the sound. Referred to as a “slapper of an anthem” the verse uplifts and inspires the football fans and players to create their own future. Booming 808s, rhythm-setting claps, and bubbly synths make up the instrumental, as Tkay raps with a contagious confidence. A guest verse from Nerve matches this energy, providing a flow that’s laid back, yet high-octane.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

The A-Leagues are the highest level of professional association football in Australia, having been established in 2004. Despite possessing a passionate fandom, A-Leagues attendances have declined year-on-year since 2014 and viewership each year since 2018. As a professional league it generates the least dollars per fan of all Australia’s major codes, lagging behind larger, heritage Australian sports like the AFL, NRL and Cricket. ‘Real Nice’ is part of a larger movement to reinvigorate and reinvent the A-Leagues as a brand reflective of Australia’s next generation. By leveraging football’s unique connection with youth culture - in music, fashion, gaming, and beyond - the A-Leagues is seizing a headstart on attracting Australia’s young taste-makers and trend-setters; future watchers, buyers and participants that will power the game for years to come.

Tell the jury about the use of music

The ask of the artists was simple: Creative self expression through football. Tkay was the lyricist working on the initial bed of music that young Franco had laid down. Tkay in particular wanted to empower fans, grassroots players and professionals to play their own way on and off the pitch. Nerve wrote his own lyrics in response to TKays, coming forth in the track as a hip-hop back and forth exchange. Real Nice translates football culture into a music track - weaving visual and lyric references to paint a vision for a new diverse, creative and expressive chapter of the game. It excites with enough universal appeal to connect with a new, younger audience, whether they play football or not.
