[Adventure of Baedal Minjok] The idea of this film was to bring the character, Beadal Jr. (which in Korean means ‘delivery’) to life. We first launched a prequel that tells us foods even with different nationality and backgrounds can all be part of our nation, and made each menu as an independent piece. This stop motion film ‘SASHIMI’ is one of the short independent pieces of Adventure of Baedal Minjok- Delivery of the restaurant food. Baedal Jr. is chased by a big fish and is about to get eaten, when suddenly a fishing net comes in and strikes the fish away. Baedal Jr. barely manages to escape from the fish as it’s made to sashimi. This short stop motion film ends with the message ‘Sashimi has now joined <Baedal Minjok>, The Nation of Home Delivery.’
We focused on food so the images were exaggerated and appeared very big in the whole film. We needed to express the challengeable, passionate but unrefined young CEO, and the character Baedal Jr. was our best choice. To well make the story plot and represent the character more attractively, the details of background and images were elaborately crafted. ‘Baedal Jr.’ was already made with real soap and appeared in various marketing, however expressing the soap texture on screen was challenging. We decided to create a stop motion film since 3D works with Computer Graphics had limits on expressing the texture. The work was moving the miniature, which was made as a miniature with the 1/10 of the soap doll, cut by cut. Filming just 3 cuts took a whole day. In addition, huge texts always appeared on the ending scene and this visual image became Baedal Minjok’s brand identity.
