Our insight was to make an ad that honoured the very best of local (New South Wales) film craft; from cinematography, editing, to sound and direction. In addition, we decided to create a piece of content that authentically honoured the unique Byron town itself, but avoided the stereotyped clichés of happy surfers and laid-back hippies. Our writer, a Byron local himself, wrote an original poem that proves our knowledge of the culture created a haunting backbone to the entire film-making team.
Every now and then you get to work on a project that reminds you of why you became an editor. What I crave more than anything as a creative person is the space to be left alone, to just let my editing and story telling develop. These days, advertising is so controlled and confined by process. But with this experimental project both the Director and I had full creative freedom to craft a film the way we wanted. The piece premiered at the Byron Bay Film Festival, giving us an ideal platform to showcase our vision.
