Essentially, eight strangers gather around a breakfast table and tell their personal story. The host holds up plates one by one, each with different stories on them, the guests then have to guess which plate corresponds to which person. The results are surprising. There's a man who raised three daughters alone. A Chinese man who speaks fluent Te Reo. A young women who worked in a conflict zone. In some ways it's as if all of New Zealand was at one table, just sitting down for breakfast, having a chat.
Real people were cast, from all walks of life. People sent casting tapes in their backyards and lounge rooms. They were the real people of New Zealand, not actors of performers. Each was chosen based on the unique story they brought to the table. What was essential for casting, to retain the element of surprise, was to ensure that everyone knew as little as possible. Great lengths were gone to to ensure no cast met prior to meeting at the breakfast on the day. This ensured authentic reactions and heartwarming stories were captured.
