We designed a soap pump with a built-in timer to extend kids’ washing time. When it is pressed, the LED timer is activated and plays a 20-second song that ends right when it’s time to rinse. Our song tells the story of a “Dirty Monster” (???) who gets washed away by water and vanishes. Each verse was accompanied by a specific hand gesture or “step” for rubbing your hands with soap, making up a 5-step “choreography”. The soap bottles were deployed in school bathrooms across southern rural China, where we taught young children how to properly wash their hands in 20 seconds with our song. The bottle label was revamped to feature the dirty monster, with each line of the song’s lyrics inscribed on each of the monster’s ten arms as he shows us the 5 steps of proper hand washing.
