Mainstream beer consumption in New Zealand was declining at 6% versus the previous year. Not a great statistic when you are a mainstream beer brand like DB Export. We needed New Zealanders to drink more beer. So we turned our leftover brewing yeast into a biofuel, and in doing so turned drinking beer into an act of environmental heroism. The more DB Export they drank, the more good they’d be doing for the planet. We turned 116,000 tonnes of yeast slurry, from the DB Export brewing process, into 600,000 litres of biofuel called DB Export Brewtroleum. We created enough Brewtroleum to supply every Gull station (New Zealand’s leading biofuel producer) in the country. As a result we lifted our sales by an unprecedented 11%, won an NZ Sustainability Award and are in discussions with Heineken Global on how we introduce the process into at least 50 other Heineken Breweries around the world.
