This project was designed to promote the fact that ANIMAX, a TV channel in Japan dedicated to anime, had started a service in April that lets users stream unlimited anime on their smartphones.
The video was uploaded to YouTube on April 1, 2015, and reached 2,500,000 views in just 7 days. Initially views rose in China and Russia, and then it went viral worldwide. The many comments included, “That’s great!” “Where can I get one?” “I want it!” and “What a great idea.” The story and the unique “teburakuchin” design created a buzz that spread through multiple social media.
Based on insight that people’s arms get tired after watching video on smartphones for long periods of time, and using the occasion of April Fools’ Day, our objective was to make up an imaginary overseas TV program and an imaginary product, attract attention with their humor and originality, and raise awareness of the anime streaming service in a bold and far-reaching way.
