Cultural / Context information for the jury

New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the vote. We have the first Prime Minister to give birth while holding office. Our country is known for being a pioneer and leader in women’s rights. Something we as a nation are extremely proud of. However, in every society there are a select few whose views seem to contradict and counteract positive progress. New Zealand, as progressive as we are, is no exception. In reality misogyny still exists - women were hit hardest in unemployment, we are actually slipping backwards in pay equality. As we’ve seen in history, and in The Handmaid’s Tale, all it takes is a small minority using fear and hate to galvanize an uprising. Who are we to say it can’t happen here? As long as misogyny exists, so does the threat. A reminder we can never stop fighting for equality.
