Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

This is an innovative selfie device that turns the “temperature check” process into entertainment. We became interested in the boring temperature check because of the belief that the entertaining event experience already begins at the entrance. For example, when you go to a festival, the first thing you want to do is to get excited at the entrance gate, take a picture, and smile at the entrance. Our goal is to make the act of taking your temperature fun and enjoyable, and at the same time, to create a memorable experience that you can take home with you.

Background

In this era, it has become common for people to take their temperature when entering an event or facility. While it is important, many people find it troublesome. Furthermore, stand-alone temperature checkers are sometimes ignored. However, the more enjoyable an event is, the more exciting its entrance should be. Therefore, we have enlisted the help of DataScope, a Japanese company that develops and researches image recognition, and Canon, a company with advanced printing technology, to transform this boring temperature check into an entertaining experience in a very Japanese way.

Describe the idea

We invented "Thermo Selfie", a service that converts temperature checks into entertainment. "Thermo Selfie" takes a picture of the user along with the temperature and prints the picture with the temperature as a memorial card. The card can be used as an entrance pass with a photo to prove normal body temperature, and at the same time, it can be a memory of your visit to the venue in your good condition. With the traditional Japanese "box-type photo machine" method, we transform a boring temperature check into an entertaining device, let users start a fun event with a smile from the moment they enter.

What were the key dates in the development process?

On April 25, 2021, the third state of emergency was declared in Tokyo, and a number of events were cancelled, then we stared to make this product for the better and entertaining world. We immediately created a prototype and released it on August 29. After that, quickly improved the auto running version without operators, which was introduced to the first client on September 9.

Describe the innovation / technology

The movable, stand-alone machine is equipped with a high-quality thermo checker, a speedy card printer and a special application. It takes about 10 seconds from taking a picture to printing a card. The design of the card, both front and back, can be customized to include a photo frame for each event, a random coupon, or a surprise signature or message. This service was set up at various events such as restaurants and weddings, where people of all ages were seen smiling with the peace sign in front of thermo checkers. The non-verbal design and simple operation made it easy for foreign visitors to experience this.

Describe the expectations / outcome

Exposure in a variety of media including TV, design media, and technology media, with an ad conversion value of over 20 million yen. The service is going to be introduced to major sports leagues, famous music festivals, wedding halls, department stores in Shinjuku, and prime locations in Shibuya, establishing it as a single service. This is a product that will become the new standard service for future events in the world.
