This is the story of Dr. Dnyaneshwar Bhosale- the visionary who gave up his high-paying city job and moved into the heart of the country with his wife, Priyanka, and their son. He was driven by a singular dream - to build a state-of-the-art hospital for those who could afford it the least. After the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, Dr. Bhosale labored day and night to save thousands of lives. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the virus himself. Some people live on in their children and loved ones. Others, like Dr. Bhosale, survive in their work and ideas, transcending to a higher meaning. Dr. Bhosale’s vision of building an institution of care is now being realized by Priyanka Bhosale. She is building a hospital in her late husband’s memory - with the support of the ‘Vicks #TouchOfCare Fund’. In her words, “He is no longer a person. He is a purpose.”

The anthropologist Margaret Mead once said that the first sign of civilization is a healed femur bone. In most other mammals, a broken femur is a death sentence. In a mature human society however, most care for their kin, some care for complete strangers, while others make caring a way of life. I had the honor of speaking extensively with Priyanka Bhosale, Dr Dnyaneshwar’s widow. This led to a paradigm-shifting insight- our care for loved ones is hardcoded and our empathy for strangers is an efficient pay-it-forward bio-social system, but the greatest human aspiration is to create institutions of care. There are perhaps two methods of inventing meaning- the biological continuity of having children, or creating solutions that sustain life. Dr Dyaneshwar’s greatest dream was to extend his spirit into systems - resilient institutions that survive long after him. This is the philosophical framework of my treatment of the story.
