As one of Australia’s largest insurers, Suncorp is determined to make a difference. While it can’t prevent extreme weather, it can work towards the next best thing: improving the homes Australians live in. With this in mind, we set out to design, test, and build a prototype house constructed to better withstand the natural disasters affecting the state of Queensland, where Suncorp operates. We gathered some of Australia’s leading minds on natural disasters, home resilience, and environmental and architectural best practice. Together with experts from James Cook University, the CSIRO (Australia’s preeminent body responsible for scientific research), and Room 11 Architects, we explored ideas that would make a home safer, more liveable, and easier to maintain in the event of severe weather. We call it ‘One House To Save Many’: the first house ever designed to be more resilient to Australia’s severe weather events.
