Background – brief – situation - objectives We received this film after it had already been choreographed, filmed, and edited to another piece of music – a challenge of course, and one that needed some head scratching and a couple of pints to figure out how to make it work. The task was to compose a piece of music which would satisfy all creative personnel involved (daunting, as there were many cooks in this kitchen), work seamlessly with the creative vision and choreography as if it had been choreographed and filmed to, and satisfy four pieces of crucial criteria: Be dancable, catchy, and memorable. Evolve with each new scene / location. Enhance and support the choreography. Have some SEA instrumental flavour, without being to region specific.
Be Drawn In shows Singapore through a new lens, helping us uncover a world of possibilities as we reimagine travel. Energetic dancers are the tour guide as our protagonist is guided through a city coming to life through eight of Singapore's vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods. As each location changes, a new set of dancers and choreography help express what is native to that location. The composition aims to strengthen this relationship.
Three one minute tracks were composed to the film. This duration was enough for all parties involved to decide which track they felt best worked for the creative vision. From there, we developed the remaining two minutes of the chosen track, managing the flow of feedback as described above, and finding ways to adjust to a changing edit. With all the back-and-forth, it was challenging to retain the original and already approved foundation, while visual and creative elements around it were shifting. Sound design was being developed during the composition stage as well, with some local diegetic sounds being used in the composition to enhance the Singaporean identity of it's sound.
