The film is set in a not-so-distant dystopian future, where the bickering Australian states have slammed shut their borders. In 2031, the nation is permanently divided by a towering concrete wall that scythes through stunning beaches, border towns and the vast expanse of the Australian outback. Providing a tongue-in-cheek take of what could happen if division continues unchallenged. Everyday life continues in the shadow of the great wall, until the mouth-watering aroma of Aussie lamb kick-starts a revolution to tear it down. We follow people from all over Australia attacking the wall with hammers, spades, mops, BBQ tongs, a tractor and even a tank. As the wall comes down, we see the 8 states coming back together, whilst taking every opportunity to have a satirical swipe at one another. Until the nation is finally reunited around an epic lamb BBQ positioned heroically at the top of a mound of rubble.
Australia is a federation of six states and two territories. In any normal year Australians are free to move between states without restrictions. Indeed, most Australians have been blissfully unaware of the state borders. In 2020 that all changed. For the first time in over 100 years, the bickering state premiers slammed shut their borders - separating friends, families and entire communities. Dominating news across the nation. Queensland Premier Annastacia PaĆaszczuk openly warring with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian. Western Australia closing its border to the rest of Australia. Victoria, the Coronavirus pariah state, and its Premier Daniel Andrews berated up and down the land for multiple hotel quarantine breaches. The state 'border wars', dubbed by the media, denied 25 million Australians their freedom of movement in their own country - strikingly at odds with the low Coronavirus cases. We needed a bold, provocative campaign to tear down the metaphorical walls.
