Malaysians love food, or as we call it, “makan”. As a nation home to many ethnicities, food brings Malaysians together. Malaysia Day is a national holiday celebrating the union of East and West Malaysia, symbolising unity among all Malaysians. To celebrate Malaysia Day, Grab created a music video featuring close to 400 Grab Signatures restaurants in a single film, where the lyrics and visuals were comprised almost entirely of restaurant names and food.
The campaign was specifically conceived to celebrate Malaysia Day, which is similar to Independence Day, but celebrates the union of East and West Malaysia. In many ways, Malaysia Day is even more significant than Independence Day, as it symbolises unity among all of Malaysia’s various ethnic groups. Malaysia Day is also a prime advertising season for brands in Malaysia, kind of like the Super Bowl, where brands compete to have the most talked-about ad during the celebration. Celebrating unity with food is uniquely Malaysian, as sharing different food types and cuisine brings Malaysians together like nothing else can.
