Retold With Pride was a retelling of great literary classics for the greater cause of representation and inclusion, retold by Globe and Pride@Tech. From world-famous tales to iconic local classics — it flipped the script on the stories we’ve all grown up with to reflect nuances of modern-day queer realities. A collection of ten stories with titles like Little Women Loving Women, Life of Bi, The Gay Gatsby, Pride & No Prejudice, Dragula, including local stories like The Nightingale Named Adana and Florante and the Trans Kween Awra. Ten stories that brought to light the bold and diverse LGBTQ+ realities about sex and romance, and controversial topics like threesomes, trans love, and polyamory. The stories were put on the centerstage of today’s culture: Premiered in a Facebook live reading, presented along Philippine literary pieces at the country’s premier literary festival, and released week after week as Instagram Stories.
And from the words the tales came to life. The collection of ten stories were turned into vertical storybooks especially designed for Instagram Stories, created using native and interactive features of the platform so people could take part in the tales and have a hand in the cause of representation and inclusion. Illustrated by various artists and designers who carefully designed every frame to bring to light the bold and diverse realities of LGBTQ+, beautifully draped in a range of diverse art styles. For The Adventures of Sherla Holmes, Film Noir illustrations were used to bring the complexities and misconceptions of a bi love triangle to life. For Little Women Loving Women, the endearing art style of children’s books captured the budding love of two young women. For Dragula, a bold pop art style created the super colorful, super powerful world of drag. For Pride & No Prejudice, impressionism art styles spoke to the soft yet powerful feeling of falling in love. In The Nightingale Named Adana, visual themes inspired by the art of tarot cards brought the magic and lore of this proud tale to phone screens. The Strong and the Handsome, took a page from Filipino comic art to show this iconic, local tale in a brave new rainbow light. While touches of asian influences and a color palette inspired by the transgender flag adorned the frames of Memoirs of a Gay Shah. And for Florante and the Trans Kween Awra, a contemporary vector style with social media textures shaped this modern-day trans romance. Each style, each element used, was truly made for the platform and was instrumental in depicting the LGBTQ+ realities we wanted to tell, represent, and celebrate.
