Background

Music for all. The ‘Sound-Free Concert’ started with this aspiration in mind. This concert came to life by creating a music device for the hearing-impaired which made it possible to experience the orchestra through “hands.” We created a poster to announce and raise awareness for the ‘Sound-Free Concert.’

Describe the creative idea (40% of vote)

The posters visualized the most prominent feature of the ‘Sound-Free Concert’ to “experience the orchestra through hands”. We used the insight that music are sound waves that travel through the air, eardrum and to the rest of the body.

Describe the execution (40% of vote)

We expressed “experience the orchestra through hands” by making each piece played in the concert into a visual of their sound waves. The sound waves were cut out using a laser cutter, and projected onto hands with light. In black-and-white, unique to orchestral scores, the contours of the hands were photographed against a beam of light to create the feeling of warmth and progressiveness with a touch as if they are an illustration.

Because it is not possible to take pictures of the performance scenery, many audiences uploaded poster pictures on SNS as "proof of participation in this concert". Awards: 2020 D&AD Awards
