NTT Docomo's next-generation communication technology, 5G, is yet to be commercialized. This technology is capable of transforming the future of our society, and our aim was to make more people aware of its possibilities by creating a music video in collaboration with the iconic techno-pop group Perfume.
NTT Docomo is working on having 5G commercialized by 2020. This next-generation communication technology is known for its high-speed, large-capacity, low-latency and massive terminal connectivity capabilities. Getting the general public to fully comprehend how 5G can unlock the potential of mobile communication was not an easy feat. Thus, our challenge was to create contents that would showcase the potential and features of 5G in an easily understandable way.
A song about 5G titled Future Pop was specially composed for the project. Using both live action and CG, we also created and released a music video that depicted a future in which IoT, automated driving, AR/VR and 5G have become the norm.
A song about 5G titled Future Pop was specially composed for the project. Using both live action and CG, we also created and released a music video that depicted a future in which IoT, automated driving, AR/VR and 5G have become the norm. 5G technology was actually used to film some of the live action scenes in the music video.
We counted down to the release of the new song by creating a series of trailers that were published as Instagram stories on Perfume's official account during the week leading up to the project's implementation. We also released a music video and later, a video explaining how 5G technology works.
The project went viral in the media with the video garnering over three million views and the song being selected for the Kohaku Song Battle, the annual New Year's Eve television program broadcast live across Japan.
