Write a short summary of what happens in the film

The film consists of 6 sets of father & son from 3 different Pacific countries. Each is given questions about gender that normally men don’t discuss as much, and perhaps never with their fathers. As they go through the questions, they grow closer and more insightful into each other’s positions and motivations. We are given a glimpse of how much is still open and unknown about gender. And we offer an unexpected, tender view of men: sometimes tentative and flawed, they too might be trying to get to a more equalitarian life, and looking for answers.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Gender gap is a universal issue. The challenges continue to be more acute for women in Asia Pacific - the 2018 Gender Gap report by WEF ranks Indonesia as 85th, India 108th, Japan 110th, and Korea 115th, of 149 countries. Gender inequality varies by country, but rigid cultural norms (women as the main bearer of unpaid work at home, or restricted responsibility at work), are often the major factor holding women back from equal opportunity. Societal norms that are embedded in people’s everyday lives make it difficult for everyone to see the real problem and missed opportunity - which leads to fewer discussions. The Women Will Data Explorer campaign surfaced the contradictions between how we think we live and how we really do. By using data in an interactive tool and storytelling, we provided a thought-provoking trigger for the conversation to be had and hopefully for change to happen.

Please tell us about the social behaviour and/or cultural insights that inspired your campaign

Gender in Asia-Pacific is a problem with many nuances. What is certain is that a lot of “universal” concepts get lost in cultural translation. We aimed to create a piece that could be inclusive of men and provide vocabulary and allyship to join the gender conversation and rethink long-held positions. The father-son relationship is crucial in most Asia-Pacific, heavily patriarchal societies, and that helped give shape to a conversation that could be very specifically tailored. As the political turns personal, we can see how some conversations are held for the first time and how fathers and sons come to realizations about themselves, across generation, and especially about the women they are talking about.
