This film dramatises a universal social issue by taking the audience into a colour-coded world, where a clear divide exists between the rich and the poor, the urban and the rural, the employers and the employees, etc. The first half of this film depicts a cold and sullen society marred by uncertainty and distrust. Tension builds as groups clothed in different colours find themselves in conflict situations. The climax of this film arrives when one protagonist from each scenario takes the progressive step by opening the door that had been keeping people apart. This is when the colours of the clothes turn into white; the only element that had been separating the groups is now removed. The second half of the film naturally takes on a different tone; the world suddenly becomes warmer, friendlier and closer, as every person now belongs on the same side – the side of progress.
While Malaysia is famed for its cultural diversity, sometimes diversity in itself becomes a double-edged sword. There are still instances of our society segregating people by race, and there are those who still pass unfounded judgements on a fellow countryperson based on their colour. These events have often brewed racial tensions under the facade of a harmonious nation. In order to bring attention to this social issue while not sparking a controversial conversation about race, we decided to use this film to highlight the segregations that stand between individuals instead of groups.
As the 3rd largest local bank in the country, RHB had always needed to be authentic and relevant in the eyes of Malaysians, in order to stay hot on the heels of the other two banking giants. That's why, instead of following the footsteps of other banks by producing a conventional National Day film that panders corporate-like narratives, we have set out to tell a profound and provocative story that is centred around a social issue that has been dominating the nation's headlines.
