Lee Dae-ho is the Seoul’s first ever Deaf taxi driver. Deaf people have extremely low accident rates(0.012) yet problems still persist, as the direction and different sounds may be misinterpreted. So, Hyundai Motor Group decided to create a driving assist technology for the Deaf driver. We focused on the fact that Deaf people are relatively more sensitive in sight and touch, and developed technology to translate all sounds into visual and tactile stimulus. After a long study, a Quiet Taxi with Hyundai Motor Group's technology will begin its first drive with driver Lee Dae-ho on Dec. 1, 2018. With the safe driving of a Quiet Taxi, not only the driver but also the passengers on board are relieved and satisfied. Also 90% of the passengers showing willingness to ride again.
In Korea, taxi driver is a job that many elderly people chooses as their second career after they retire from their first. As such, it is an societal issue many people identify with, but the issue of deafness is something else entirely. That is because most people are not even aware of the fact that deaf people can drive. That is why we chose Mr. Lee Dae-ho, who despite his impairment chose this vocation, and the letter his daughter left for his customers in the back of his taxi, to be the central theme of our campaign.
