Background

With the worsening impacts of global warming, the Philippines ranks among the countries most exposed to threats of a disrupted climate. Eight of the 10 most disaster-prone cities are in the Philippines. WWF wanted to shed light on the situation and engage more people to participate in efforts to combat climate change, and let them know that they can make a difference even with simple acts.

Describe the creative idea (40% of vote)

In a 2019 Pew Research international survey, 72% of Filipino respondents cited climate change as a top concern for the country. While many in the country consider it as the biggest global threat, it also seems like a daunting task for the average Filipino citizen to solve. We wanted to show that, on the contrary, a simple act such as switching off your lights even for an hour can make significant impact on stopping the damage we sometimes unknowingly deal to the environment. By participating in Earth Hour 2019, you are already helping slow down nature’s destruction.

Describe the execution (40% of vote)

Simple, graphic posters and print ads were designed to depict how a simple act of leaving the lights on can contribute to the destruction of our forests, coral reefs, and glaciers in the Arctic, leaving its inhabitants threatened or endangered. To clearly show this message, familiar electrical home appliances like lamps were integrated into the design. The lights these lamps cast are shown as heat destroying their immediate vicinity, like laser beams cutting through anything in their path. As a call to action, Filipinos were encouraged to participate in Earth Hour by switching off the lights to help save energy and life on our planet.

List the results (20% of vote)

The campaign helped push awareness for and participation in the Earth Hour event where: 68 municipalities, 81 provinces, 145 cities in the Philippines participated. This resulted in 195.34 Megawatts of power saved, an increase of 78% vs previous year’s Earth Hour.. That savings is enough to power 63,750 homes Earth Hour also earned PHP 110M+ (USD 2.10M+) worth of media values from the campaign.
