Background

At least 240,000 people marched in protest of the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill on 9 June. Hong Kong has always brought a lot of inspiration and influence to Taiwan, just like a good friend from whom we learn a lot. In reality, I also have many Hong Kong friends in my life. On June 9th, I saw read from the news and the Internet that friends and residents of Hong Kong took to the streets for freedom. That is not an easy task, and I want to make my least contribution by encouraging and comforting them through my design.

Describe the creative idea (40% of vote)

As a designer, I echo to the pulse of the society.
 I have designed this ‘dual-oriented’ phrase, by combining the Chinese characters of “Hong Kong” and “Add Oil” . Due to the integration of culture and language in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the daily life language is very similar. Taiwan or Ethnic Chinese people everywhere share the same feeling for the Chinese characters " 加油 ADD OIL (Chinese phrase meaning Cheer up) .

Describe the execution (40% of vote)

At the most complicated and difficult moment, what we need is the simplest and direct communication. Therefore, I encourage the Hong Kong friends with a most direct and simple image design method. "Double word" is a design with two meanings at the same time, and often brings surprises and reflections to people. This is the philosophy behind my creation of this double-word "Cheer up, Hong Kong”.

The design aroused widespread media interest and reports in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as more than hundred thousands sharings online, I also received more than 1000 mails showing appreciation and requests for the authorization of usage right, It even ran on magazine cover of Business Weekly as Taiwan’s most influential financial media .Very soon, the design appears in varieties of products even got tattooed on human bodies, as a media combining their daily lives and believes. I have faith in this design to bring courage to those who need it, In merely 50 days, I witness the unity of Hong Kong people, as well as the power of design!
