Period: October 19, 2018 - November 4, 2018 (17 days) Venue: Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi) lawn area Number of visitors: Approximately 30,000 Target: The main target was those interested in design, though the general public was also targeted. Display method: Cube-shaped containers were placed symbolically on the lawn. The module tools that come out of the containers provide visitors with the experience of spending time as they please. The container also functions as a showcase that can be used flexibly, becoming a workshop space or gallery. The universal design of a container does not require any special permits to transport them, and within it, a tool is stored to generate unique activities in each location resulting in the creation of a mobile park. During the 17 days, this park transformed into more than 10 different contents in accordance with the various players who visited.
The creative solution is a design concept that raises a question. The concept does not give the future one defined shape. It is thought up and composed by each visitor. The module system gives shape to the way visitors spend their time in the park. This module can be stored compactly in a container and moved to another location to become a new Future Park. The versatility included in the design solves individual issues at each location, while the mechanism allows for universal usage.
Parks should be places open to everyone, where users take the lead and various ideas are generated. Today, Japanese parks have many rules and do not function in that way. Our aim was not only to resolve this situation, but to use our design to give people the experience of thinking for themselves about the potential of parks. Inside a cube-shaped container there is a module that can change shape freely. These not only make parks pleasant, they create active scenes where people can act freely.
We received approximately 30,000 visitors during the 17-day event, contributing to attracting visitors to one of the highest attended DESIGN TOUCH events thus far. We also received a lot of media attention, appearing in 10 different media outlets. Although it was content in a design event, it was also acclaimed as an experimental project in a public context. (Winner of the Experimental Design category in the 2018 Outdoor and Public Space Award)
