Cultural/Context information for the jury

From 1970's to 1980's the golden era of independent cinema in Taiwan, cinema houses employed full-time poster masters to supply paintings for movie billboards; this craft is now on the verge of extinction caused by cheaper digital printings. Mr. Yen, who has painted for nearly fifty years, is the last poster master in the island who still works for a historical cinema in Tainan, a cinema determined to reserve the precious culture and craft. The making of hand-painted movie billboard is not only replication; expert on enlarging visuals to billboards, the master may also create the visual by deploying the best essence from movie plot after viewing, and make the movie stars alive on the billboards. Gucci Art Wall in Taipei embraces this local spirit, reminds the public of this craft of treasure which tells a history of prosperous movie industry, both the craft and this culture are irreplaceable.
