Write a short summary of what happens in the film

Our video, Unfinished Games, looks at the life of a female athlete devoted to winning an Olympic gold medal. Kumi Nakada is currently the coach of the Japan women's national volleyball team. She became a member of the 1980 Japanese Olympic team at the age of 15 and participated at the next three Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona. While her career has been brilliant, various setbacks prevented her from fulfilling her dream of winning an Olympic gold medal. In the video, she talks about the four games that transformed her life while walking through a museum-like space displaying large images from those games that evoke memories and strong emotions. Still devoted to volleyball, this indomitable female athlete continues her quest on the road to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Once known around the world as the Witches of the Orient, the Japan women's national volleyball team brilliantly won medals at four consecutive Olympics: a gold medal in Tokyo (1964), silver medal in Mexico City (1968), silver medal in Munich (1972) and gold medal in Montreal (1976). Expectations were so high that even silver medals disappointed fans. Since earning a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, however, the team has failed to win any Olympic medals. Japanese are now desperate to see their female volleyball team win a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Coach Kumi Nakada debuted as a player in 1980 just before the team’s slump began. All of her 1980 teammates had previously won gold medals, so it was natural for her to pursue one for herself.

NOMURA PRESENTS At the Tokyo Olympics, I want us to win a medal. That’s all I want. Unfinished Games I was selected for the national team when I was 15. (Super) Kumi Nakada Head Coach Japanese Women’s National Volleyball Team I think that’s when I decided to take the shortest path to the Olympics. -Wow! -That brings back memories. If I hadn’t played in that game I’d have just gone to an ordinary high school and ended up playing volleyball like any other high school girl. -What’s my number? I was playing in the Japan uniform but my ability as a player wasn’t on that level yet. I didn’t know how to close the gap. But I was very happy. Because I was living my dream. My biggest dream. -I think I remember this moment. -Now it’s the Seoul Olympics? -So these are from Seoul. (Super) 1988 Seoul Olympics Game against Peru This is a game against Peru. I guess for the five of us in this picture it’s a game we want to forget. We couldn’t take control. We were just reacting. I think I put all of my volleyball hopes on these Olympic games. But we couldn’t win a medal. We knew it was important but we couldn’t make it through to the end. And we completely lost our drive during these Olympics. There were four years between Seoul and Barcelona. I didn't think I was going to play in Barcelona. (Super) 1992 Barcelona Olympics Game against Brazil But then I suddenly thought I had to do it. Even though my doctor advised me not to play in the Olympics again I went for it anyway. I guess because it was the Olympics. But I couldn’t imagine myself playing in the next one. I think I truly did my best. Really. No matter what anyone says. When I was working as a color commentator I couldn’t figure out the deeper reason why I had been playing volleyball. I just couldn’t find the answer right away. Then...my father passed away. He said “I have no regrets in my life.” When I heard him say that I realized I couldn’t stay like this. -Wow. -How long does this go on? -Oh this is a game against Brazil. -This is the very first season after I became the head coach of the national team. (Super) 2017 Women’s National Team Game against Brazil -This is the moment we won. Yes. -This is the moment we won. It feels great to see the players’ expressions the moment they won. It makes me happier than when I won while I was a player. The special time of playing volleyball I want them to seriously think about it, tackle it, face it, get hurt and I want them to live with all their energy. If you give everything to it, sometimes it breaks your heart. But athletes need to have the resilience to get back up on their feet again. After all, I had my heart broken three times at the Olympics. It’s not just about winning a gold medal. It’s about the thrill of challenging yourself to reach your potential. I think that’s why you can push yourself that far. You know how people are afraid of making mistakes these days? You should take a step forward anyway. I want us to give a breath of fresh air at the Tokyo Olympics. Challenge leads to the future. Nomura Holdings supports the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
