Write a short summary of what happens in the film

What is the first gift you gave to your child? Was it a teddy bear? A silver spoon? The very first gift you gave your child must have been a name. From the day your child was born until today, you must have given birthday presents, Christmas presents and countless others presents. And of course, countless memories as well. But one day, in the future, there will come a day, of parting. For your treasured children, what is the last gift will you give?

Cultural/Context information for the jury

By the year 2030, Japan will be a super-aging society with 1/3 of its population becoming over 65 years old. However, situation still is that preparation to hand down their assets, approximated to be 1,500 trillion yen, to the next generation (in the form of inheritance or donation) is making little progress. This movie was created for Japan’s No.1 securities firm to be shown at their seminars held at 156 branch offices nationwide to acquaint their customers on this topic. The Japanese way of naming a child is conducted with parents using the resource of several thousands of Japanese kanji characters. They read into the meanings of the kanjis and the ways they can be pronounced. Appreciation for the birth of the child, the prayers and dearly hopes for the well growth of the child are embraced in every name.

Super: Do you know the origin of your name? Asuha: That I grow tall and healthy, that is about all I know… Norimitsu: I’m not aware of the details… Riko: How my name was decided? Sayaka: I really don’t know… Shou: The origin of my name? I don’t know… Off-narration: Our daughter’s name is Asuha. Off-narration: She was born a very small baby. And when we were thinking about her name, we found these leaves called “ashitaba” (angelica keisei.) You pick its leaves at night and the next morning you already see new buds forming. Seeing such vitality, we were certain this was the right name. Off-narration We chose this name with hopes that he will be a child that shines by receiving teachings from people. When Norimitsu was born, all we thought about was that he will grow well and healthy. Off-narration Our daughter was born in May and we saw a small white flower of jasmine blooming so we named her Riko hoping she will grow to have grace and be a kind person. We waited 8 years to be blessed with our child so we were very happy. Off-narration We named our child Sayaka with hopes that she will always have an air of freshness. We felt we can do anything and everything for this child. Off-narration We chose this Japanese kanji character for his name hoping that he will enrich the family and that he will be able to take the right steps in his life. A name is something that parents give their children which they carry and live with all their lives. So I think parents should give good names to their children. Off-narration My life until now revolved around my son, and Shou I think was what kept me going. Off-narration Riko is an adult now and the time we spend together is not too much. I wish there are a lot more things I can be involved with Riko in the future. Off-narration My life with Sayaka and the times we were together, I was incredibly happy. Off-narration My life ahead is becoming shorter so I would like to talk to Norimitsu about many things while I am still well and healthy. Off-narration Every single thing after birth of a child is a precious and happy memory. Super: If the first gift you give to your child is a name. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Super: What is the last gift you will give? Super: Nomura Inheritance Consulting
