In a subversion of the typical corporate address video, this film appears to be an announcement about safety from Lendlease CEO & Managing Director Steve McCann. Yet it soon flips expectations to become a sweet comedy sketch featuring a diverse group of Lendlease workers and their real-life mums, showing the importance of proper safety procedures. The spot begins with Steve making what appears to be a dry, corporate announcement about a team of specialists he has engaged to help make the workplace safer. With a sudden change in tone and pace, we cut to his ‘team’ and see they are all mums. Steve’s VO continues over a series of comedy safety scenarios (each one addressing an identified ‘critical risk’), where mums intervene to keep their adult kids safe. The video ends with a coda back in Steve’s office where his own (real life) mum, Margaret McCann, makes an unexpected cameo.
The casting call took the form of a video featuring Kylie Rampa, Lendlease Australia’s Property CEO, requesting Lendlease workers to put forward their real-life mums for the campaign. Employee engagement was initiated with the sharing of this casting call to all staff via eDM, intranet posts and in person through team meetings. Support for this casting strategy came from the highest levels, as evidenced by the active involvement not only of Steve McCann, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, but also of his mother, Margaret McCann. Steve and Margaret were recruited as participants and advocates – they were key cast members in the campaign film, and have given time to promoting the campaign across the business. In addition to Steve and Margaret – seven Lendlease workers and their real-life mums were recruited to feature in the campaign film and stills imagery.
