To show people the value in the organic waste they’re throwing away, we created a weekend where we turned Auckland’s food scraps into a currency. People could collect their scraps at home in specially designed bags and use them to buy goods and services at businesses throughout the city.
We set out to increase We Compost’s collection business by making Aucklanders aware of the potential in the food scraps they’re throwing away.
On the weekend, Aucklanders exchanged over 400 bags of food scraps an hour for over $10,000 worth of goods. In the month following, We Compost's collection business increased by over 20% and now includes hospitals, shopping malls and football stadiums. From 2016, We Compost is teaming up with Auckland Council to start suburban organic collections. Due to interest from other city councils, The We Compost Weekend is set to become an annual, nationwide event, meaning millions of tonnes of organic waste will be kept out of New Zealand’s landfills.
We created compostable bags for people to use at home to collect food waste in the week before the We Compost Weekend. The bags were displayed at point of purchase in the participating businesses and staff encouraged customers to get involved. Bags were also distributed to letterboxes in neighbourhoods surrounding areas that had a high concentration of participating businesses. On the We Compost Weekend, people returned their bags of organic scraps from home to the businesses to exchange for their goods and services.
We Compost is a waste collection business that aims to divert organic waste from landfill, which currently makes up over 40% of what Auckland sends to the city’s rubbish dumps. This food waste would be worth almost $20 million a year if it was turned into compost instead. We are simply throwing away a valuable resource.
We Compost collects organic waste from businesses throughout Auckland. For their collections to grow, more businesses need to start composting. This will only happen when customers demand businesses adopt a more sustainable approach to their organic waste. So we decided to use We Compost’s network of businesses and target their existing and potential customers.
