'Say It With Signs' was met with enthusiasm during its launch, as it has a positive impact on millions of lives worldwide. The app was featured on major news channels, newspapers, journals, blogs and technology portals. After its media launch, it generated SGD$340,286 in advertising value and SGD$1,020,858 in PR Value. The PR on various news and tech media channels has also put the spotlight on the needs of the Deaf community, while inspiring others to create more ideas that will help improve their quality of life. The best result is their joy in having access to another communication tool.
So we created 'Say It With Signs' - an app that combines voice-to-text and text-to-sign technology. When someone calls the deaf person, the app, which runs in the background, is activated. As the caller speaks, the deaf recipient sees his speech interpreted as signs on his screen. The deaf person types his replies, which are then read out to the caller. This way, both could have a phone call conversation.
The Singapore Association for the Deaf is always looking for innovative ways to help the deaf achieve a better quality of living and integrate with the rest of the society. Unlike everyone else, one everyday communication means the deaf couldn't access was a mobile phone call. So our objective was to break down this barrier. The best way to do this, was to create an app which could transform how phone calls work for a deaf person.
