Brief Explanation

Instead of just showing examples of existing films, we set out to actually create new work using each technique. By showing the "making of" the audience were able to learn the process of film making by watching behind-the-scenes and seeing the masters at work. We also had to overcome the low budget, so everything had to be done in a DIY fashion. All the ideas had to be simple yet strong to be a quick entertaining example of the technique shown in the episode.

The Brief

NHK, Japan's public broadcasting organization, wanted to create a TV program that focuses on the art of film and motion graphics. The program had to reach the young audiences and inspire them to create their own film and art.

How the final design was conceived

We made a creative education TV show “Techne: The Visual Workshop.” Every episode focuses on one filming technique, and challenges artists to create a new film using that technique. Following the same concept, 3 program IDs were made per episode, using the same technique that was showcased in the show. When the theme was “Stop Motion,” we created 3 different program IDs using stop motion as its filming technique. So far we have created 27 IDs for 9 episodes. The video shows some of the selected ID pieces along with the Opening & Ending title sequences that we made.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

The show along with its IDs were enthusiastically received by our audience. As a first of its kind show that focuses on film techniques, the show is now being used around Japan in art schools as a textbook for filming. During the airing of all 9 episodes, #techne entered the Top 10 twitter trending topic.
