The interface of “au Portal” was patchy and cluttered because of its frequent service updates and was not user friendly anymore. Our challenge was to organize and restructure the portal site to improve the usability and ultimately encourage the utilization of their services.
"au" is the second biggest mobile phone carrier in Japan and runs various services for smartphones. “au Portal” is a portal site, and acts as the main gateway for their services. The brief was to renew the portal by redesigning it.
We introduced the “timeline” concept, which has become a common style in SNS services. We took advantage of the current user behaviour as they are familiar with this kind of an interface. Rather than categorizing the services in a menu, our idea was to simply display the news and updates from different services in a timeline format, which also acts as the link to the service itself.
Since the launch of the new interface, the access to each service has increased by 500%.
