The haunting imagery in the editorial space made such an impact on readers, it was discussed on TV, broadsheets and social media during the week that it ran. It took less than P3,000 to contact the columnists. But their participation gave the NUJP an audience value of P36 million.
For the second anniversary of the Maguindanao Massacre, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) took over the editorial section of the country’s largest newspaper – a section that has never been open to advertising. The paper’s columnists had their eyes shut in their photos for an entire week, sending the message that impunity leads to more deaths.
On November 23, 2009, 58 people, 32 of them journalists, were gunned down in Maguindanao province – the single deadliest attack on journalists in the history of the world. Two years after, there has been almost no progress in the case. The journalists of the Philippines needed to make a protest.
