HongKong is a melting-pot of different cultures from around the world. Pop culture, in particular, has been strongly influenced by both the East and West, with animation and cartoons being strongly influenced by both the US & Japan. Instead of watching, seeing and doing the same as the rest of the world, it was time HK created something of its own. When KMB, the oldest and largest bus operator in HK, planned to launch 5 animated TV infomercials in 2010, we decided to make something different, something ownable & distinctive, something really “local”. We invited famous local illustrator YeungHokTak to create a cartoon series. Yeung is renowned for his unique and local comic style and character creation. Yeung's work mainly depicts local, daily down-to-earth scenes. He shows real HK people living their daily lives and captures the city's true culture. All of these HK insights reach out and resonate with the HK public, in the same way that KMB as our oldest and largest bus perfectly fits as a relevant, local, uniquely HK icon.
