The Volkswagen Kombi inspired a generation to get out on the road and experience peace, love and not showering for a week. 40 years later the Grand California is imbued with that same spirit. But fortunately, it comes with a few more creature comforts.
In 1968, Eric sold his VW Kombi and bought a one way ticket to Mumbai, taking only the book “Finding Enlightenment” and a frisbee. What Eric really found was himself, naked in a Himalayan cave, collecting his sweat for drinking water and worshipping a levitating guru called Bubba Lama, who would turn out to be a delusion caused by malaria, typhoid, dengue fever and dysentery. At least his copy of Finding Enlightenment was put to good use. Every page. Eric was indeed enlightened because he’d never leave home ill-prepared again. The pilgrimages he embarks on nowadays are in his exceptionally well equipped house on wheels, with fully functioning bathroom and running fresh water. Frisbees make his knees sweat. The all-new Volkswagen Grand California campervan. The grown-up Kombi.
