The film is a story of curiosity and courage. It’s about a little kitten, called Button, who was curious about a mysterious lake by her school and endlessly wondered what lay on the other side of it. As her curiosity grew, her teacher helped her channelise it and encouraged her to follow it. Finally, against conventional wisdom and the warnings of the friends that cats don’t like water, Button heads out on a voyage across the lake in a wooden boat to explore where her curiosity leads her. The story changes the age-old belief of ‘Curiosity Killed the Cat’ to ‘Curiosity Taught the Cat’, and leaves the viewer with the thought that ‘a life of curiosity’ indeed ‘begins with a teacher’.
In Singapore, parents and students value studying and memorising answers over asking questions, giving rise to a culture of rote learning. To offer an alternate way of thinking, the film builds a value-system based on curiosity, positioning the school and its teachers as advocates for learning based on curiosity instead.
