This commercial tells the stories of five Qantas passengers and their journey home to Australia, to be welcomed by their loved ones at the airport. The stories we are telling through this campaign are repeated everyday, the mission is all about rekindling that emotional connection with Qantas that Australians have for the airline.
Filmed across six locations around the world, we followed the story of five Australians, travelling back home to their family and loved ones. To represent the Australian diaspora we conducted an extensive street casting process to find real expat Australians that took place across four cities. Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Santiago and one mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia. We cast a young Aussie woman living in London, a backpacker travelling across South America, a new mum living in Hong Kong, a little girl visiting her grandparents in LA and a ‘Fly in Fly Out’ miner. A small crew travelled to each location and documented the journey of these Australians as they prepared to travel home to their families. This included filming airside in 3 major international airports, and with 3 Qantas planes a B737-300, B747 & A380 This culminated in the arrival scene that was filmed at Sydney Airport Arrivals over 6hrs on one day. We co-ordinated the cast arriving on scheduled Qantas flights and filmed them live as they greeted their families for the 1st time months and in some cases years. This whole emotive sequence was filmed live with a multiple camera set up. We also filmed the journies of the families as they prepared to leave home and collect their families from the airport. In 3 weeks we edited a 2min and 5 x 60s stories. The whole production took thousands of man-hours, over 11 weeks from sign-off until it was on air.
