Every day, millions of life-changing events take place, but for some, barriers like distance, make being part of these profound moments an impossible dream. So we decided to remove that barrier to bring people together like never before with Samsung VR technology and a project called LifeLIVE. To make it happen we searched the world until we found Alison and Jace, an Australian couple about to give birth to their third child. Problem was Jace was over 4,000kms away – 3 time zones. Having to work to support his growing family, he had resigned himself to missing the birth. LifeLIVE would change this fate by letting Jace be there for the birth, standing right beside his wife’s bed in the delivery room, even though he was on the opposite side of the country. A customised 360 camera in the hospital sent a life stream to Jace, which he watched via a Samsung Gear VR headset. When his wife needed him most, he was there, looking over her and offering support in the world’s first live virtual reality birth. The miracle of technology had brought the world the miracle of birth in a way never seen before.
Casting for LiveLIVE was a formidable task. Within the production timeframe we needed to find real people for whom it would be utterly impossible to attend a life-changing moment. Although many face this challenge, we had to ensure that the story had universal resonance and that the key players would work on film. On a brand level, we also had to remember that the story and characters had to feel right for Samsung. We cast the net globally, reaching out over social platforms such as marriage and birth blogs while also investigating nursing homes, therapy centres, the armed forces and hospitals. Working with these various limitations and demands we sifted through dozens of submissions until eventually found a couple on opposite sides of Australia.
