Brief Explanation

For the very first time, new media creation is being advocated for the 1st HK-SZ Design Biennale: New Media Exhibition. The theme DynamiCity, with the letter C in capital, was to bring in attention to the urban dynamics in the cities. Referenced on this, the visual identity created on the poster and motion wall are based on the data of two cities to create visualization. All these had formed an interactive exhibition space for cutting-edge experience to the visitors to explore the different kinds of "dynamic" from both cities.

The Brief

Our society has been transformed into a digital information driven network where contains rapidly changing of data, keep evolving in millisecond. To visualized this situation, we used program to create the generative typography as the visual identity for the 1st HK-SZ Design Biennale: New Media Exhibition – DynamiCity. The motion-typefaces visualized the urban dynamics in between 2 cities - Hong Kong (HK) and Shenzhen (SZ) and drew the attention of the public to aware the rapid changing of these two cities, whereas the distance from HK to SZ is just 17.15km.

How the final design was conceived

For DynamiCity GenType, each character represented a specific social issue referenced from the urban data of HK and SZ from 2012 to 2014: D - Density of Population Y - Yearly Growth Rate of Economics N - Net Income A - Aging Problem: Median Age M - Modernization: Country Park % I - Immigration: Visitors C - Climate: Yearly Rainfall I - Infrastructure: City T - Traffic: Vehicles Y - Yearly inflation Rate The generative forms of type are following different mathematics algorithms. For example, the density of the population (D) was calculated from the molecular formula, the modules of the letter became more packed with higher density value; Net income (N) was calculated from the cloth physics that the higher value would make the cloth had a higher waving interaction with the wind.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

Altogether 40 designers from Hong Kong and Shenzhen showcased their own digital works in the 1st HK-SZ Design Biennale: New Media Exhibition. There are more than 80,000 visitors engaged in this 2 months exhibition in Hua Art Museum and Dalang Fashion Valley in Shenzhen. The motion-type sculptures we did for the visual identity for the exhibition drew the attention of the citizens of HK and SZ to the aware the rapid changing of their own living cities and take a deeper insights to look into these two cities under the same country.
