The client wanted to expose their brand and business informing the public how 3D printing technology can be used better in real life. We found blind students didn’t have yearbooks, so let them have yearbooks which they can read.
The students and people attending at the graduation were exposed to the invention for the first time, Touchable Yearbook, which was created by 3D printing technology. People on the spot believed how the 3D printing technology could change the world.
Touchable Yearbook made a huge impression to more than 2,000 people attending at the graduation. They spread the invention via their mouths. The client were estimated to give impressions to at least 2,000 people and to build strong brand relationship with the audiences. Moreover, the students can keep their memories alive now by the invention.
As inventing yearbooks for the blind, we did some researches with teachers at Seoul National School for the Blind. - The shape: Between a round sculpture or a relievo (like a mask), we concluded the round sculpture would be more helpful to perceive whole facial images for the students than a relievo. - The size: After teachers had observed the students for many years, they recommended that the size should fit to palms of the students. Base on the researches, we started to producing yearbooks. - The clients supplied all devices such as 3D scanners and 3D printers. - We scanned the faces of students. - We rarely corrected the 3D data because we tried to reproduce their real faces. - After printing the sculptures, we decided not to color them; fundamentally, the texture was far more important than the coloring for the students. We could save lots of time and budgets. - Instead coloring the sculptures, we softened the surfaces of each sculpture.
We chose Seoul National School for the Blind and gave graduating students surprising presents, Touchable Yearbook. We printed their faces by 3D printers. The surprising gifts were delivered to the graduation day which more than 2,000 people attended.
Although 3D printing technology has been shown in the medias as one of the hottest issues this year, it doesn't seem to spread in our daily life yet. The Client wanted to inform the public that this technology could change our life in better ways. Having thinking over how we could satisfy the client and where this technology could be applied best, we found that the blind didn't have proper yearbooks. And so we decided to invent 3 dimensional yearbook for the first time, Touchable Yearbook. We chose Seoul National School for the Blind(SNSB) to donate the first Touchable Yearbook. Before implementation, we did some researches on how the blind distinguished the objects with teachers at SNSB because yearbooks for the blind had never been tried before. As the client provided 3D printing facilities, we could save lots of budgets and we could invent Touchable Yearbook successfully.
