Brief Explanation

With its new engine and improved gas mileage, the new Toyota Vitz now offers an even brisker ride around town. It’s not just a means for transportation, but a new “footwork” that invites drivers to further enjoy their everyday life. To convey this concept, we portrayed the new car as a cheerful pair of yellow sneakers happily skipping through the streets with its light, rhythmical dance steps. In the age of the internet where everything can be done at home, we aimed for a tone and manner which would make people want to take a step outside and explore the world with a light heart and light footwork.

Creative Execution

The Toyota Vitz television commercial features two sneakers dancing along the streets of a cityscape in order to highlight the lightness and efficiency of the new Toyota Vitz. In Tokyo, reference dancing sneakers were filmed in a fully choreographed sequence from two different angles in a process of rotomation allowing the animators to add a sense of reality to the animation of the dancing sneakers in the commercial. In Australia the real sneakers were 3D scanned in a Perth studio in order for the VFX team to model the shoes and manipulate them for the commercial. Prior to the shoot the VFX team did a full 3D pre-visualisation of the whole commercial shot for shot. As it had to be accurate to match the actual environment, the Australian VFX team then employed photogrammatry in the digital representation of the practical environment which enabled the VFX team to get realistic textures and shadowing on the shoes allowing them to be effectively composited into the practical environment. The team also created full CG Toyota Vitz cars which were animated for the commercial.
