As nearly all of the products are made by the skilled craftsmen, which is quite rare in Japan, I wanted to express a high quality of their glasses and tried to differentiate sghr from other mass-produced glasses. The gallery located in central Tokyo, where many trend spotters are hanging around, the exhibition had to be unique and attractive.
Sugahara Glassworks Inc. is a glass manufacturer produces over 3,000 kinds of handmade glass products. sghr holds a presentation on a new collection once a year and I was asked to design the exhibition. My client wanted to get more customers and deepen the bond with them.
In order to emphasise the high quality products made by hand and to express Sghr’s craftsmanship, I exhibited the products on cardboard boxes. I stacked up many cardboard boxes and hollow out the surfaces to fit on each product. Instead of exhibiting glasses on a fancy stands, I dared to adopt inexpensive cardboard boxes. The glasses brooded by cardboards look very tempting and special to the customers.
The simple yet elegant exhibition attracted customers and there were no end to the number of customers during the exhibition. Actually, the hollows and the cardboard stands were created by sghr’s craftsmen, they were able to have a chat about creating the exhibition with their customers. It happened to develop a good relationship with the customers.
