These days, modern poetry is a dying culture in Japan. Young people, especially, have preconceived notions that poetry is obscure, so they don’t read it. Tahi Saihate, Japan’s most mischievous and punk-oriented young poet wanted to make young people aware of her sensitive yet aggressive poems.
To make young people aware of her sensitive yet aggressive poems, we made a special collection of her poems.We called it SHOOTING POEMS. Shooting Poems is a shooting game in which readers (players) actually battle with her poems. The game embodies the impact a reader experiences through her poems.
Shooting Poems is a shooting game in which readers (players) actually battle with her poems. We designed the games on the web so the actual poems are the player’s opponent. The poems attack the players, who can play the games on their smartphones, computers or tablets. The game embodies the impact a reader experiences through her poems. The twenty poems in the collection employ different movements.
When readers lose a game, they can tweet their score and the poem’s URL with a message such as, “I was shot through the heart with this poem.” In this way, we brought an unprecedented buzz to her poems. Combining poems with a game and social networking, Shooting Poems has revived modern poetry.
