Sri Lanka’s power supply is heavily dependent on fossil fuels and a steep rise in the cost of electricity in May 2013 resulted in protests. SolarTherm, the country’s leading solar cell provider, wanted to change the conversation by engaging Sri Lankans from all walks of life to show them the infinite potential of solar power.
Our solution was to build the world’s first solar powered Pandol. Pandols are traditional Buddhist displays enhanced by dramatic lighting and decorations that share a lesson from the Buddha’s teachings. Unveiled during Vesak, Buddhism’s most revered day, and designed using a sun-theme, the innovative SolarTherm Pandol was an eye-catching display that was noticed by thousands of Sri Lankan during the religious festivities.
The SolarTherm Pandol generated a 50% sales increase for SolarTherm within a single month and continues to influence growth making. But more importantly, this ground-breaking communication idea educated Sri Lankans on the endless possibilities of Solar Energy. In a nation challenged by the costs of electricity, this brilliant Pandol illuminated a clear path towards a sustainable future for Sri Lanka.
Pandols are traditional, brightly-lit Buddhist displays that tell the story of the power and potency of the Buddha’s teachings. They are admired and respected by Sri Lankans regardless of status or class. The SolarTherm Pandol was the first first solar powered pandol ever built and was the ideal way to demonstrate the company's products. By unveiling it during Vesak, Buddhism's holiest day, it created a strong cultural link for the brand and engaged a large number of people.
