In the Philippines, of the total individual income tax collected in 2011, professionals like doctors, lawyers and self-employed businessmen contributed only 6.8%, with a measly average payment of P33,500 – the same amount paid by a newly hired public school teacher. Of the 1.8M registered self-employed professionals, only 22% filed their income tax returns in 2011. To remind the people to file their income tax returns on or before the national deadline, a tax collection campaign was made to show what tax cheats truly deserve.
